St Albans & Harpenden Review: New programme will promote city's heritage New programme will promote city's heritage

Plans to provide cultural experiences, promote heritage and attract visitors to St Albans district have been put in place.

At a meeting on Thursday, February 27 the district council cabinet will be presented with a three-year programme, which is aimed at building a cohesive community and supporting businesses.

Running until 2016, the programme has been put together by the council following discussions with local community groups through the district’s newly-established Arts and Culture Network.

The programme is focused on a number of core annual events, including Albantide, the Food and Drink Festival and St Albans’ Christmas events. There will also be a summer music festival in 2015.

This core annual programme will be supplemented by one-off events each year, which will include a Summer Sounds music event with DJ workshops, organised by and for young people to take place in July.

In 2015, the council will be involved in the national celebrations of the 800 year anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta.

Councillor Beric Read, portfolio holder for community engagement and localism at the council said: "The council’s events programme has been put together, after consultation with local community, arts and cultural groups, with specific aims in mind.

"Not only will the programme promote our local heritage and provide new cultural experiences for the community, it will also help develop the visitor and local economies. It involves the Council working closely with local groups and through local partnerships to help deliver the many events for the community."
