Hundreds took to the streets of St Albans on Saturday in a peaceful protest against the Government’s badger cull.

Campaigners began the walk at the Ye Olde Fighting Cocks before marching through George Street, the city centre, outside the civic offices and Hollywell Hill.

Organised by Chris Wood from Herts and Middlesex Badger Group and supported by Care for the Wild and the Badger Trust, 300 people turned out to show their support.

Jo Russell from the Herts & Middlesex Badger Group said: "It went very well. We seem to be getting our message across and the people of St Albans were very supportive."

Protesters also stopped outside St Albans District Council offices to hear speeches from leading anti-cull spokesperson Dominic Dyer, CEO of Badger Trust and Policy Advisor for Care for the Wild, St Albans MP Anne Main and Simon Cowell from Animal Aid.

Mr Dyer said: "I’ve worked in the agriculture and food industry for most of my career, and this is the worst agricultural policy I’ve seen in 30 years.

St Albans & Harpenden Review:

"I’m sympathetic to farmers, but culling badgers simply won’t work.

"Ordinary people from around the country have come out to protest against this barbaric cull, and we’re looking forward to seeing many of them come to St Albans.

"The time has come to stop the cull once and for all."

St Albans MP Anne Main added: "I was very impressed by the turnout and the good nature of the walk and its participants. Given the specific underperformance of the pilot badger culls I feel it is imperative the Government listens to the IEP findings and reflects on the concerns of thousands of people across the UK, and not least hundreds of my constituents who have contacted me on this issue.

St Albans & Harpenden Review:

"Whilst I am sympathetic to the concerns of farmers and want to see a solution to Bovine TB I cannot support a barbaric and inhumane cull.

"I am calling on the Government to halt the cull now and to not extend any further licences whilst they review how we can deal with the issue of tackling Bovine TB."
