Competitors in St Albans pancake races were cheered to the finish by St Albans Mayor and about 200 other spectators on Shrove Tuesday yesterday.

The Pancake Race and Flippin’ Walkers Race took place in St Peter’s Street, St Albans, and both were organised by St Albans City and District Council.

The placings were as follows:

Pancake Race:
1. Leisure Connection’s St Albans Arts, Sport and Health (SAASH)
2. Everyone Active
3. Fitness First.

Flippin’ Walkers Race:
1. Atlas Translations Ltd
2. Hare and Hounds
3. Rennie Grove Hospice Care.

More than 90 people competed in the races, with 20 teams running in the Pancake Race, and seven teams competing in the Flippin’ Walkers’ Race.

Mayor Annie Brewster presented frying pan awards to the winning teams.

She said: "Many congratulations to everyone who competed in the 2014 St Albans’ Pancake Races, especially the winning teams from SAASH and Atlas Translations.

"Everyone deserves praise as it takes considerable skill and hand/eye co-ordination to be successful in these races, particularly at the pace our competitors were moving.

"One gentleman came on a bus all the way from High Wycombe to join the hundreds of spectators because he had enjoyed watching the City's Shrove Tuesday event last year.

"A special ‘well done’ to the teams who dressed up as hares, hounds and bumble bees and in pilot’s uniforms, theatrical masks, pink wings and yards of flowing cassocks."

The races were sponsored by McDougalls and Phil Richards of Radio Verulam compèred the event.
