St Albans District Scouts turned out in force to take part in this year’s St George’s Day Parade.

Led by the Mayor of St Albans, Annie Brewster, more than 1,500 representatives of the district’s 16 Scout Groups marched from the Civic Centre to the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban on Saturday, April 26.

Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, Explorer Scouts and the Scout Network, took part in the parade flying their own flags.

The Scouts took an active part in the packed service at the Abbey, which was led by the Sub Dean, Rev Canon Richard Watson. The young people renewed their scouting promises in the service, led by a Beaver, a Cub and a Scout.

Anne Barnes, scout district commissioner, who addressed the congregation said: "St George’s Day is the one opportunity the public have to see how strong Scouting is in St Albans, the largest district in Hertfordshire.

"Ours is an amazing organisation that gives young people an equal opportunity to develop their skills and personalities in a fun, challenging, yet safe environment.

"The restriction to more young people joining is always down to our finding even more volunteers. Although the number of our volunteers has doubled since 2006, we still have massive waiting lists.

"Adults have as much fun as young people, so belonging to our Scouting family is rewarding and the time folks give is very flexible. St George’s Day is also the time I can publicly thank our incredible volunteers, for the brilliant opportunities they offer our young people."
