A St Albans school pupil is delighted to have been selected for the final Top 50 shortlist in the 2014 Radio Two Words Competition.

Beth Watkins, 9, who is in year four at Beechwood Park School, wrote a story called The Agonising Summer, about a group of friends’ adventures at summer camp, which has been recorded by BBC Radio.

She has now been invited, along with the other Top 50 shortlisted entrants, to attend the Hay Festival on Friday, May 30 for the live broadcast of the BBC Radio 2 Chris Evans Breakfast Show, where the winners will be announced.

Patrick Atkinson, the school headteacher, said: "We have been delighted to hear of our pupils’ successes in the Radio Two 500 Words competition this year.

"Fifteen pupils, from years 2 to 8, were selected by the judging panel to go through to the second round of the competition. Out of a total of over 118,000 entries, that is a magnificent achievement in itself. We were so pleased to hear that Beth’s story has got through to the Top 50."

The short story competition is spearheaded by the BBC’s Chris Evans.
