Two mothers from Harpenden are set to cycle their way to raising money for a cancer charity.

On Sunday, June 29 Penny Bird and friend Angela Swann will be taking part in the Macmillan Cycletta event in Woburn Park, Bedfordshire.

Almost two years ago, Penny started a Facebook cycling group called ON-YER-BIKE for Harpenden mothers. They meet at the school gate every Monday morning and take turns planning or leading a route. The routes are usually 10 to 15 miles with the aim of completing exercise and getting fresh air.

Their 'off road' routes include quiet lanes, bridle paths and disused railways.

Penny said: "It is actually amazing what you can discover if you take a little time to explore the area armed with an Ordnance Survey map or a suitable App.

"I have set myself a personal goal to take part in my first organised cycle this year. I've chosen the Macmillan Cycletta because Macmillan support the people I love who have cancer and it is a women-only event to encourage more of us to get out on our bikes. "

The cycle has three distance options, between 20km and 70km, making it inclusive for all levels and abilities.

So far the funds Penny and Angela have raised could fund a Macmillan Nurse for more than 15 hours.

Kerry Cunnane, Hertfordshire fundraising manager said: "I wish Penny and Angela the best of luck with their cycling challenge. This is a fantastic women’s only event and there is still plenty of time to sign up so why not grab some friends and take on the challenge together, like Penny and Angela."
