A club that supports people with dementia is being launched in St Albans and is appealing for volunteers and members.

Hertfordshire Community Meals is launching its St Albans dementia-specialist fun club at the Jubilee Centre in Catherine Street on Friday, July 11.

The club, which will run every Friday and support people with low to moderate dementia, was set up with a £8,000 donation from a generous anonymous benefactor. The new group is modelled on successful clubs in Letchworth and Hitchin, launched last year.

Suzy Duxbury, club co-ordinator at Hertfordshire Community Meals, said: "Living with dementia can be very isolating, so we hope that St Albans’ new Jubilee Club will provide a break from the daily routine for local people with the condition, and some respite for their carers.

"The clubs are great for carers too, of course, knowing that their loved ones are having fun in a safe environment gives them the confidence and the freedom to take time out and do something for themselves."

The club will aim to provide a variety of fun, stimulating activities that are designed to prolong memory, encourage movement and improve members’ quality of life. This will be everything from painting and singing to chair yoga and manicures. They also offer a chance for people with dementia to get out of the house for the day, meet up with friends and enjoy lunch.

Sarah Wren, Chief Executive of Hertfordshire Community Meals, said the generous donation had enabled them to extend services to vulnerable people in the city.

They are now looking for club members and volunteers who are able to help out with activities, games, quizzes and crafts.

Anyone interesting in joining or volunteering at the club should contact Katherine Draper on 01462347031 or email info@hertscommunitymeals.co.uk.
