2. My Boy Jack

The Company of Ten has painstakingly recreated the drawing room of Rudyard Kipling’s family home in Sussex for this play which focuses on the anguish of the world-famous author during World War One.
Written by David Haig and based on a poem by Kipling, My Boy Jack, is set in 1913 as England is getting ready for war. Kipling is torn between love for his son and an unswerving belief that his country must defeat Germany at all costs. Three-quarters of the action takes place in the Kiplings’ 17th Century home and the company has created an almost identical oak-panelled room from scratch for the performances, including the view from the drawing room window. Abbey Theatre, Westminster Lodge, Holywell Hill, St Albans, November 7 and 8, 8pm, November 9, 2.30pm and November 11 to 15, 8pm.
