Verulamium Museum was evacuated this morning due to concerns over an object had been brought in to the building.
Hertfordshire Constabulary and the army's Explosive Ordnance Disposal team were called to the museum in St Michael's Street at about 11.50am.
The adjacent building and Saint Michael's Church of England VA Primary School were also evacuated.
People were free to return to the evacuated buildings just after 12.30pm.
