Harpenden Town Council has apologised for a "disappointing" start to the Christmas light display.

Many of the light bulbs were filled with water and did not work. The council said this was down to changes to the regulations about festive lights displays, which meant they had to upgrade connections and light fixings.

Harpenden Town Council have apologised and assure residents everything is being done to not only keep the lights on in the town centre but also achieve a seasonal appeal.

This year, the town council will be pushing their contractors to keep the lights working, whilst beginning to replace the feature tree lights with a more robust and reliable product. The council will continue to work hard for the residents of Harpenden to provide Christmas lights that are big and beautiful and give the wow factor for all the town to enjoy.

The faulty lights have been taken down and replaced. Mary Maynard, Harpenden Town Mayor said "My greatest moment as Mayor was being on stage as the Christmas Lights were switched on this year and seeing all the children’s faces light up as we switched on the beautiful Christmas tree on Church Green. Residents go into Town to see the lights. Over the last few years, the Town Council has been adding to the display every year and last year it was excellent."
