GREAT cars do not need to be large, luxurious, expensive or massively powerful. Alec Issigonis proved that comprehensively more than half a century ago with the brilliantly conceived classic Mini.

A car that combines space, economy, practicality and versatility at an affordable price, while also being fun to drive, is a truly compelling package.

That is what Skoda offers with its first model to compete in the city car sector.

Its appeal is simple. The Citigo’s wheels sit right out in each corner, with small front and rear overhangs giving the ideal proportions for a city car, able to slot easily into the tightest parking spaces.

Our top stories

Compact exterior dimensions house a remarkable amount of interior space, allowing four adults to travel in comfort.

But the Citigo is much more capable than a simple city runabout, as it avidly soaks up the miles on longer journeys.

The choice of Citigo models is straightforward – three and five-door versions, four trim levels and an efficient 1.0-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine with two outputs: 60 horsepower and 75 horsepower.

The all-aluminium units feature the latest fuel-saving technology, including start/stop ignition systems, brake energy recovery and low rolling resistance tyres.

The Citigo’s boot is the largest in its class, holding objects up to 58cm high. Flip down the rear seat back and luggage capacity soars, allowing objects close to two metres in length to be transported.

The hatchback is solidly well-equipped with an assortment of useful storage spaces including cup holders, multimedia slots and nets on the sides of the front seat back rests.

Top of the equipment highlights is the smartphone-sized device that clips to the dashboard delivering everything from satellite navigation route mapping to Bluetooth hands-free telephone connection, vehicle and trip information and a media player which can be synced to an external music device.

Safety is first rate, with electronic stability control fitted to all SE, Elegance and Sport models, and the entire range has been given a EuroNCAP Five Star rating But more importantly than all the practical and versatile features, the car is great to drive.

The little car got off to a flying start when it was launched in 2012 by being awarded Car of the Year by Auto Express.

And recently Skoda added another trophy to its growing collection when the Citigo won the supermini category of the Green Apple Awards, organised by the Midlands-based The Green Organisation and judged by members of the Midland Group of Motoring Writers.

Its combination of economy, price, build quality and driving pleasure proved a winner. So while the Citigo might not be big, plush or powerful, it is a great little car.
