The Pickwick Club take over the Radlett Centre

Following European Arts Company’s previous visits to The Radlett Centre with Chekhov’s Shorts and the successful touring show of The Picture of Dorian Gray, the theatre company, which has recently relocated from Charles Dickens’ home town of Rochester to Maidstone in Kent, returns to Hertfordshire with another classic adaptation of Dickens’ first story The Pickwick Papers.

Originally written as a serial, The Pickwick Papers introduced readers to Dickens’ rich and highly individual characters.

This physical show titled The Pickwick Papers – The Original Road Trip reveals the bizarre antics of Samuel Pickwick and his co-conspiritors in The Pickwick Club as they carouse around the 19th Century by-ways of rural England.

Featuring a versatile cast of six, including TV and stage character actors and packed full of comic set-pieces, this clever stage version follows the eccentric perambulations of Mr Pickwick and his fellows.

Expect foul play as Pickwick and company get into all sorts of scrapes including duelling, bribery, fisticuffs, mistaken identity and near drowning in this rendering of the much-loved tale.

l The show is at The Maltings Arts Theatre, The Maltings, St Albans on Wednesday, April 1 at 8pm. Tickets: 01727 844222, www.stalbans.gov.uk Melanie Dakin
