Watling Street, St Albans
Sunday 26th September

St. Stephen’s is a historic pilgrim church, situated on the Roman road of Watling Street on the southern edge of St. Albans. Part of the Saxon structure still stands, although the original building has been greatly altered and extended. The church includes a 13th century chapel, thought to be a Leper Chapel, a Tudor roof and some fine 19th century stained-glass. St Stephen’s also contains the oldest Font in the city and the churchyard includes part of the Roman cemetery. Amongst the many interesting graves can be found that of Tessa Wheeler who did much of the work to excavate Roman Verulamium. Cream Teas will be served whilst the church is open from 1430 to 1700.
