The grandson of famous filmmaker Stanley Kubrick has followed in his footsteps – but not in the movies.

Jack Hobbs was just nine when the Clockwork Orange director died and says one of his fondest memories is their shared passion for music. A passion he has now taken foward by starting up his own record label on the Childwickbury Estate, which his grandfather bought in 1978 andwhere he was buried.

“I learned to play the drum kit when I was young, Stanley was a keen player too,“ says the 25-year-old who grew up in Markyate listening to Supertramp, Bryan Adams, Genesis, Maroon 5 and Creed, and went to schoool at Beechwood Park and Haileybury College.

“I used to sneak into the room next to his office when we visited and play quietly on his drum kit but failed miserably. He came in and told me to keep it down!“

Jack has transformed the old saddle room on the estate, which Kubrik used as a nerve centre for films such as Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut, into a studio and launched Jacket Records.

“I have always loved and worked in music, from performing to songwriting to live sound engineering.

"I have constructed a production studio at home in St Albans and felt that the best method of producing and releasing great quality music was to form a record label.

“Artists never have enough money to pay for recording expenses. Through the label I can sign artists into a deal in which they can get their music professionally recorded, released and promoted in return for an even split of the profits.“

But did he ever consider getting behind a camera instead of a sound desk?

“I thought about music for film,“ says Jack, who has so far signed two artists to his label, Hope (debut EP out now) and Melodi (debut EP out February 2).

“I also direct and produce music videos for the artists on the label. I love making videos, but it’s not as fun as making music.“

The St Albans resident, who says his idol is Guy Garvey from Elbow, doesn’t mention his famous connection unless someone asks, but says he feels “no pressure, just inspiration“ from it and his dream is to “bring talented, honest and driven artists to the spotlight in the UK and beyond to get the success they deserve“.
