Firefighters are still at the scene after a large pile of wood was set on fire at a recycling centre in Potters Crouch in the early hours of yesterday morning.

Crews from St Albans, Watford, Garston, Hemel Hempstead, Redbourn and Wheathampstead have been at the scene in Appspond Lane, since 1am on Sunday morning.

Initially firefighters left the recycling centre after a few hours of putting the fire out, but were then called back at around 9am on Sunday morning after the fire flared up again.

Diggers, used by the services, are currently being used to move the wood material, thought to be around 20,000 tons, so they can locate and fully extinguish the fire.

The St Albans & Harpenden Review has been told that firefighters are still on the scene and will be there "unforeseeably" until the fire is put out.
