Thousands of people had the chance to explore the new Westminster Lodge Leisure Centre at its launch weekend.

More than 8,000 people visited the centre on Saturday to check out the new facilities.

Claire James, PR manager for the centre, described the event as "extremely successful".

She said: "It was incredibly busy.

"It was above and beyond expectations.

"The corridors were absolutely rammed from the time we opened until we closed.

"I never saw a time when the pool wasn’t packed with people."

A host of sporting celebrities, including Saracens players and members of Team GB and Paralympics GB, attended the event.

Paralympic rifle shooter Georgina Callingham, gymnast Max Whitlock and open water swimmer Kerry-Anne Payne were just some of the special guests.

During the morning the centre organised an open swimming session for children.

In total 120 youngsters had the chance to try out different activities including synchronised swimming and water polo.

Zumba classes, karate demonstrations and cheerleading displays were also going on throughout the day. During the weekend 2,000 people signed up for memberships and 1,200 children were enrolled in swimming lessons.

Ms James added: "The feedback has been fantastic.

"It was an extremely successful weekend."

The multi-million pound centre includes two swimming pools, a gym, spa, climbing wall and four sports courts.

There is also a crèche, children’s soft play area and café.
