A couple who compiled a CD collecting photographs of 274 pubs and signs in St Albans to raise money for an adults and children’s hospice have said they are ‘astounded’ at reaching their £1,000 target.

Rosemary Wenzerul and Tony Stevens vowed to keep hold of the history of pubs in the city and decided to compile photographs of past and present pubs in St Albans noticing many pubs were closing down in the area.

The 346 pages on the CD contain more than 600 photographs including colourful public house signs and the CD has been selling for £3 to raise money for Keech Hospice Care for adults and children.

Rosemary, who lives in Bricket Wood, said: “People have been absolutely amazing and me and Tony are astounded at the support.

“We noticed pubs closing down at a horrific rate all over the country, not only in St Albans.

“Now if they all close, there will be a collection of all of them in the area.”

Rosemary is a member of the Bricket Wood Society and had heard through the grapevine that Tony Stevens, secretary of the Park Street and Frogmore Society, had taken photographs of pub signs over the years.

She then got in contact with Tony and together they compiled the CD of city and village pubs over 18 months called "Before they all disappear".

The pair sold their CD at a stall during the CAMRA St Albans beer festival over two days and Rosemary said it was a great opportunity for people to come along and bring them closer to their target of £1,000 in donations.

Rosemary, of Ashridge Drive, said: “I never did think we would reach £1,000.

“I am very surprised and we sold £591 worth of CD’s at the beer festival, which was amazing.

“I am over the moon and we would like to thank everyone for being so marvelous.”

The Park Street and Frogmore Society and the Bricket Wood Society sponsored the project and the CD is still being sold for £3 to raise money for the Keech Hospice.
