Residents show support for proposal for new museum
Residents are behind plans to build a new museum in St Albans city centre, research has shown.
A survey of museum visitors has shown that people want a more participatory and social site with both permanent and temporary exhibits.
St Albans District Council will use the findings to support its application for Heritage Lottery Funding.
Councillor Mike Wakely, portfolio holder for sports, leisure and heritage at the council said: “We are moving forward with our plans to revitalise the Museum of St Albans and breathe new life into the Town Hall.
“We have now lodged our Heritage Lottery Fund bid to help us create a wonderful cultural asset in our historic city centre.
“We are seeking a sizeable sum of money and it is a highly competitive process. Nevertheless we believe we have a strong project. This is a once in a generation opportunity.
“We are keen to involve museum visitors, residents and key cultural organisations in developing the interpretive strategy and activity programmes.
“The development of a new museum is a long term project which will take several years to come to fruition. In the meantime, it is very much business as usual.”
