A woman from Redbourn has won just under £5,000 as part of the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust Flight for Life Lottery Superdraw Jackpot.
Linda Doman was invited to the Herts Air Ambulance Airbase at North Weald with her family to meet the air crew, see the helicopter up close and of course be presented with her £4,874 cheque.
She joined the Flight for Life Lottery after receiving a visit from one of the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance Canvassers, who currently go door-to-door to promote the lottery and gain new members.
Ms Doman said she knows just how important the service is as two years ago she experienced first-hand the life-saving work of neighbouring operation, East Anglian Air Ambulance.
In December 2010 she collapsed after a car veered into her in heavy snow conditions while she was placing her grandson’s school bags in the boot of her car.
She said: "Fortunately, my grandsons were at the side of the car as the impact moved my car down the road.
"The paramedics soon arrived but due to the conditions they were unable to get an ambulance to me hence the East Anglian Air Ambulance was deployed, and as the light was beginning to fade they had to move quickly.
"I was duly hoisted into the helicopter and whisked off to Addenbrookes, the team on board were wonderful and kept me as comfortable as they could. As I was conscious they wanted to ensure I wasn't in too much pain.
"I have always wanted a helicopter ride but not in these circumstances."
Ms Doman added she thoroughly the visit to the Air Ambulance and hadn't realised that it was all charitable funding that made the service viable.
The other winner of the prize draw was Rose Workman from Hemel Hempstead.
