Drivers warned after catalytic converter and spare wheel thefts in south west Hertfordshire

Motorists in south west Hertfordshire have been warned to be on guard after a recent increase in catalytic converter and spare wheel thefts across the county.

Hertfordshire Constabulary urged drivers to park their vehicles in garages where possible and consider fitting a suitable locking device to their spare wheel carriers to deter thieves.

Inspector Paul Lawrence, from the Crime Reduction Unit, said: "There’s been a rise in the theft of catalytic converters in recent weeks, particularly from commercial diesel vans, because the units are easier to remove. We have also seen a rise in the theft of spare wheels, which are accessible from underneath on some vehicles.

"These items are being stolen for their scrap metal value, and they are difficult to secure so we are asking all members of the community to help us catch these thieves.

We are also working with scrap dealers across the county to ensure that any stolen items come to our attention immediately."

And this is how the article should read:

"Criminals are warned not to steal catalytic converters and spare wheels.
Inspector Paul Lawrence, from the Crime Reduction Unit, said: "There’s been a rise in the theft of catalytic converters in recent weeks, so we have upped patrols and are going to start arresting people for it.

We are also arresting scrap dealers across the county who deal in stolen goods"

Now, doesn't that read better?

How it should read:

Inspector Paul Lawrence, from the Crime Reduction Unit, said: "We have stopped talking about what we are going to do and have been out and caught these criminals in the act and also arrested a number of associated scrap metal merchants. We have also been fully assured by the judiciary that these criminals will get good long sentences of hard labour as a deterrent to others. We welcome the governments new initiative to allow judges discretion to increase the sentence by up to 50% for those who are not British citizens with a minimum residency of 20 years. All sentences in future are to run serially instead of concurrently."
