Plans to recycle a wider range of plastics are set to come to St Albans over the next few months.

St Albans District Council plan to recycle a wider range of plastics, including margarine tubs, yoghurt pots, food trays, ice cream tubs and fruit punnets following a successful trial in Redbourn.

Plans to increase the amount of recyclable waste collected in the area will be rolled out in stages to the entire District over the coming months, and the next stage will cover How Wood, parts of Park Street, as well as a significant part of the central and south eastern areas of St Albans.

The council also plan to introduce indoor food waste caddies and liners to help make it easier for residents to recycle food waste.

Councillor Daniel Chichester-Miles, portfolio holder for environment at the council, said: "The council has a target of increasing the household recycling rate to at least 60% by 2015.

"A waste audit last year showed a lot of the waste that is going to landfill is food and plastics. By increasing the range of plastics we collect and by providing food caddies, we will make it easier for residents to recycle this type of waste."
