A new chief executive has been appointed to take control of St Albans District Council.

James Blake, who lives in St Albans with his family, will take up the role from Daniel Goodwin who left the organisation at the end of last year.

Mr Blake has worked as the deputy chief executive for public services since December 2008.

He said: "It’s a huge privilege to be appointed as chief executive of the council in the place where I’ve been fortunate to live for over ten years.

"It is a great place but we are not immune from the economic, social and environmental pressures that face the rest of the country.

"I am keen for the council to do all it can to support local residents, businesses and community organisations to overcome these challenges.

"I look forward to working closely with councillors, officers and partners across the district."

Mr Blake has been the acting chief executive since Mr Goodwin left the council in December.

As well as his new role, he will retain some of his existing responsibilities with public services.

Prior to moving to St Albans District Council, Mr Blake had a variety of roles in central government including deputy director in the Department for Communities and Local Government.

He has also worked as a researcher at Cambridge University and is a trustee of the Youth Hostels Association.

Councillor Julian Daly, leader of the council, said: "I am pleased the council agreed to appoint James Blake as chief executive.

"This decision is good for the council, providing continuity in the leadership team and stability as we continue to implement our strategic priorities.

"It’s great that we can recruit from within and are able to recognise James’ strong performance over recent years."
