HMV in St Albans to close HMV in St Albans to close

The St Albans branch of entertainment retailer HMV will be closing, administrators announced this morning.

The chain has revealed that 66 stores will be closing their doors, including the one in St Peters Street, leaving 930 employees without jobs.

There is no set date for the closures but it is expected to be within the next couple of months.

Stores in Watford and Luton will also be shut.

The retailer, which has been running for 92 years, was forced into administration on January 15.

Nick Edwards, joint administrator, said: "As part of our ongoing review of HMV’s financial position, we have now completed a review of the store portfolio and have identified 66 loss making stores for closure.

"This step has been taken in order to enhance the prospects of securing the business’ future as a growing concern.

"We continue to receive strong support from staff and are extremely grateful to them for their commitment during an understandably difficult period.

"All other key stakeholders remain very supportive and I continue to be hopeful of securing a future for the restructured business."

Leaving St. Albans with no cd shop at all.
And no, I certainly don't count the miniscule selections in Tesco Metro and Sainsburys - most of which are the same 20 or so titles.

Given Hertfordshire was already down to only 2 stores during the 2012 Record Store Day (a store in Welwyn Garden City was listed but didn't join), with a population of 1.1 million, it's fair to say the company is becoming something of a wasteland for music fans.

For the 2013 record store day one solitary store in Hertfordshire is listed.

A very sad loss for all of & especially the staff. Why is it that in this situation, St Albans stores are one of the first stores to close? Like Thorntons, Mothercare, Ernest Jones & others. It must be that it is not profitable. As a shop owner I can see this myself. It is time our council stops its anti business policies & cuts parking charges. With over 60 retail closures locally, it is time the council stepped up to support local shops.
