Having, along with everyone else, suffered what seems to have been endless cold, dismal, grey days we were able to enjoy a few spells of sunshine earlier in the week.  It was still very cold but such a joy to see colour again.

I was treated to a similar feeling of intense pleasure on Friday.  Whilst doing my less than inspiring weekly shop I went to choose some flowers and found bunches of 20 British daffodils on sale for the princely sum of £1.  How do they do it?  I only hope some dedicated flower growers somewhere aren’t going out of business.  But the buds are already beginning to open up and by tomorrow I expect them to be showing off their brilliant colour.  I know as cut flowers they don’t last very long but what pleasure they give.

Despite the cold lots of spring flowers are showing promising signs of activity.  A near neighbour has a good display of snowdrops outside his front windows whilst my hyacinths and liriope muscari have put up shoots and hopefully it won’t be too long before they are in flower – a sure sign of better things to come.

The days are appreciably longer and even seeing the heavy snowfall in New York and remembering that we often get bad weather afterwards doesn’t damp down that feeling of hopefulness.  There is so much to look forward to.
