A band manager with close ties to the music community in St Albans died in a "tragic accident" while setting up a stage in Guildford.

Former business manager of the Alban Arena, Paul McMullen, died when a loading bay door fell on him during preparations for a concert on Saturday.

The 44-year-old from Stockport was at Guildford's G Live venue, with the band he managed called Fisherman’s Friends, who were due to play a gig there.

He was pronounced dead at the scene after the four tonne door fell on him and singer from the band, Trevor Grills, who then died in hospital on Monday night.

Mr McMullen started at The Alban Arena in 2000 as the marketing manager, and subsequently went on to become the business manager.

He left in 2008 to promote and manage bands including Adam Ant, Fun Lovin Criminals, Seth Lakeman, John Cooper Clarke and Fisherman’s Friends.

Although no longer employed by the arena, Mr McMullen was well known and liked by current and former staff members.

A statement from the arena staff said: "All the staff at The Alban Arena are deeply saddened by the loss of long time colleague and friend, Paul McMullen, in a tragic accident.

"Despite moving on in 2008 to promote tours across the country, he still had strong ties with the venue and St Albans as a whole and will be sorely missed.

"Our hearts go out to his family and friends at this time."

Mr McMullen’s band Fisherman's Friends had performed at The Alban Arena on Friday night, supported by local act, Said The Maiden.

The band’s Saturday performance, and another by comedian Seann Walsh, were both cancelled.

Surrey Police and the Health and Safety Executive are investigating the incident.
