Commuters are facing a "very very difficult day" after First Capital Connect has confirmed there will be severe disruption to trains between Luton and St Albans until after tomorrow morning’s rush hour.

Collapsed power lines at Radlett railway station just after 11am today have caused the cancellation of trains between Luton and St Pancras in London.

Engineers are currently investigating the damage caused.

St Albans Councillor Chris white, said he was contacted by FCC to warn him about the severe disruptions.

The Liberal Democratic councillor who works in London, said: "It’s going to be a very very difficult day. I am now trying to work out how I am going to get out of London. No doubt others are too.

"As a daily commuter it just seems to be one thing after another. We pay a lot of money, over £3,000, getting on towards £4,000 nowadays.

"There is perpetual uncertainty day by day whether you’re going to get the train you expect or whether the whole lot are going to breakdown. It is not unusual for the whole lot to break down.

"That basically makes a busy life for commuting, tougher than it needs to be.

London Colney Councillor Jacob Quagliozzi, who also works in London, said he would be late for a scheduled meeting tonight and planned to work from home tomorrow.

He said: "To be honest as a commuter, I am not surprised.

"However this seems a lot more serious, which isn’t going to be fun."
