Luton Airport will run a number of trial flights over St Albans to measure noise disturbance.
Planes leaving the site currently follow a Noise Preferential Route (NPR) which seeks to avoid neighbouring populated areas.
However some flights are flying outside of the path and going over St Albans and Hemel Hempstead.
The trial, which will begin tomorrow, will see if switching to a more precise navigation system will help the aircraft stay on track.
Airport staff will measure the environmental noise impact before and after the trial.
Residents will also be asked if they have noticed a difference.
The trial will be split into two phases and will begin tomorrow if weather conditions are correct and last until May 24.
