Firefighters were called back to a recycling centre in Potters Crouch that was ablaze for more than two weeks last year, after a large amount of smoke was seen above it.

Drivers travelling on the A414 called 999 on Saturday after seeing smoke coming from Wood Recycling Services Limited in Appspond Lane.

A crew from St Albans went to the site at about midday and found that there was no fire, and that the smoke was due to the wood chipping being moved.

In February the Environmental Agency revoked the centre’s licence meaning that it is no longer allowed to operate.

The owners were given 20 working days to clear the site so the revocations will come into effect on March 22.

Firefighters spent an hour checking that the site was safe.
