Seven years ago planning permission was approved to build a 450 seat grandstand complex at Angerland Common Playing Fields. But, amid much criticism, the University did not provide community group Sport Hatfield with the mooted 50 year peppercorn lease to enable the stadium to be built. But now things could be about to change for the better.

A new community group called Hatfield Sports Association have taken the baton and there is now real hope that a planning application to build a clubhouse and changing block will be submitted by the end of May with the Uni paying for the development. The University closed the Angerland Playing Fields almost 9 years ago, to build their 760 space Park & Ride facility but have made no attempt since to reinstate the sports pitches.

The cost to do this, and replace the changing room block they demolished, would be around £1.2million. And two years ago, Sport Hatfield suggested to the Uni that they use this money to construct a much needed stadium and home for the nomadic Hatfield Town FC plus the Hatfield QE Rugby Club and Crusaders Cricket Club, with proceeds from the clubhouse being used to maintain the pitches and facilities for the benefit of all. The University could avail themselves of it too. However, actual plans for the new development remain secret.

Mike Millar, ex member of Sport Hatfield, said "I hope that whatever is built will be fit for purpose and allow for the sustainable development of the various clubs using the facilities. Whatever is proposed should be attractive for spectators to visit too, and include options for uses other than sport to generate the income required to make the scheme a success. It should be great advert for Hatfield too"

The previous scheme included for an enclosed ground, floodlights, perimeter fencing and a large balcony to the rear of the clubhouse overlooking a rugby or cricket pitch, thereby doubling its usefulness.
