Sexual assault, criminal damage and drink driving are just some of the things that St Albans pensioners have been arrested for in the past year.

Statistics released under the Freedom of Information Act reveal that 138 people over the age of 65 have been arrested in Hertfordshire, including 11 from St Albans and Harpenden.

A total of 153 arrests were made in the county in connection with 172 offences, meaning that some of the pensioners were arrested more than once.

All of the pensioners who were arrested in St Albans and Harpenden were men.

Nine of the 11 offences in the district were allegedly committed by St Albans residents.

They included the arrest of a 69-year-old man for allegedly causing actual bodily harm and a 72-year-old  man in connection with a sexual assault.

The most common offence in the district was drink driving with five arrests.

A further three offences were committed in St Albans by people who live outside the area.

A 65-year-old Harrow man was arrested for driving while disqualified on the city's roads.

Criminal damage in St Albans led to a 73-year-old of no fixed abode being arrested.

A 90-year-old man from Hemel Hempstead was arrested for assisting someone to commit suicide in the city.

Olivia Finucance, senior press officer at Hertfordshire Constabulary, said: " We are dedicated to protecting the people of Hertfordshire and bringing offenders to justice if they commit a crime.

"If officers have reason to believe a person has broken the law they will be dealt with accordingly.

"If the person(s) are deemed ‘vulnerable’, appropriate measures will be taken to ensure they are supported through the judicial process.

"The figures released of people over the age of 65 who have been arrested highlights that, regardless of age, if an offence has been committed we will take action and ensure they are brought to justice."
