Primary schools in Harpenden and Wheathampstead could be expanded to meet the increasing demand for places.

Hertfordshire County Council has named ten schools that are being considered for expansion across the district, providing 204 extra permanent places for 2014.

If accepted High Beeches in Harpenden will take on an extra 30 children and St Helen’s in Wheathampstead will welcome another 20.

Chris Hayward, cabinet member for enterprise, education and skills, said: "Like many other local authorities, Hertfordshire is in a challenging position with a significant rise in the number of children registered with GPs who will require primary school places within the next few years.

"The proposed 2014 programme will enable us to provide the right number of places in the right location while making sure that the expansions are affordable and maintain the quality of our schools."

The final decisions will be made in June and July.
