New volleyball facilities created using sand from the Olympic courts will be officially opened this weekend.

Taster sessions and other related activities will be on offer at the Verulamium Park courts on Saturday and Sunday.

St Albans is one of six locations across the country to be given the sand from the Olympic volleyball courts, which were located at Horse Guards Parade in London.

Mike Wakely, portfolio holder for sports, leisure and heritage at the council, said: "Come down to Verulamium Park at the weekend to try out these new beach volleyball courts.

"They use the actual sand from the Horse Guards Parade Olympic pitches that you may have seen.

"Volleyball is an intensive enjoyable game to play or watch and certainly helps keep you fit."

This weekend’s launch, which has been organised by the district council, coincides with Volleyball England’s Go Spike campaign, which is trying to get more people involved in the sport.
