Preparations underway for annual Highland Gathering in Harpenden

St Albans & Harpenden Review: Last year's event. Last year's event.

The sound of bagpipes will be heard in Harpenden this month as the annual Highland Gathering returns to the town.

Preparations are well underway for this year’s event, which will take place in Rothamsted Park on July 14.

A host of traditional Scottish events and entertainment will be on offer during the day, including Highland dancing, live music and games.

Falconry displays, fire breathers and a dog and duck show will also take place during the event, which is organised by Harpenden Lions.

Organiser Bengie Waldon said: "The preparations are going well.

"It is a very busy programme. There is always something to look at and there is lots of stuff for the kids.

"It is such a lovely warm and friendly event. Everybody there always seems so positive.

"The one thing we’re hoping for this year is better weather.

"Last year it was appalling right up until the day."

A number of stalls selling food, drinks and gifts will be set up during the day and representatives from a variety of charities will also be on hand to talk about the work they do.

The Luton Youth Jazz Orchestra will also take to the stage to perform for crowds.

About 7,000 people attended last year’s event raising £10,000 for charity.

All money raised on the day is split between Harpenden Lions’ charities, including Parkinson’s UK and Home-Start St Albans.

Mr Waldon added: "The event has a great history.

"The Scots are very proud of the Scottishness of it and the English are curious.

"It is a great event."

Entry to this year’s Highland Gathering, which will run between 10am and 5pm, costs £3 in advance and £6 on the door.

Tickets, which are in the form of a programme of events for the day, are available at WH Smith and the St Albans tourist centre in the Town Hall.
