War veterans have had the opportunity to inspect a newly-restored war memorial in St Albans.

The grade II listed St Peters Street memorial has been cleaned and the stonework has been re-pointed over the past few months.

The names of soldiers were also re-engraved on the stone panels around the base.

Reg Cox, former chair of the St Albans Burma Star Association, said: "It’s wonderful to see the war memorial now restored.

"Anything that records the horrors of war and the loss of the youth of our nation is imperative.

"We don’t want wars like this to happen again.

"Please be ever mindful that your democratic freedoms from tyrannical regimes are the legacy of those who made the ultimate sacrifice."

Don Dell, chair of the St Albans Branch of the Royal British Legion, added: "I want to thank the council’s democratic services team for their hard work and continued support in the restoration of the war memorial at St Peter’s Street, and others around the St Albans area.

"The memorial is something that we should all be part of and feel proud of."

St Albans’ mayor Annie Brewster met with the veterans during their visit.

She said: "It was a total pleasure to spend time with our remaining St Albans Burma Star heroes.

"It is the least we can do to maintain a fitting memorial to those who fell, not just now, but in perpetuity."

Restoration work will also be carried out on other memorials in the district, including those on Holywell Hill and Verulam Road, later this year.
