The owner of a St Albans shop is preparing to race the Great North Run in memory of her friend.

Leah Rowland, who runs the Green Boutique in Village Arcade, will take on the half marathon challenge on Sunday, September 15.

The 36-year-old is attempting the 13.1 mile cause to raise cash for The Hospice of St Francis, which looked after her friend Stephanie Pratt before she passed away.

Stephanie, who lived in St Albans, passed away in June 2011 aged 30.

She said: "I just wanted to say thank you to the hospice for everything they did for my wonderful friend and colleague Stephanie Pratt, who spent her final days there before she passed away.

"I’ll be dressing as SuperGirl but the SG will actually mean Steph’s Girl.

"The hospice couldn’t have done more for Steph and her family in their hour of need - and they continue to do so.

"The people and facilities were beyond words and to think this is predominantly funded by donations is incredible.

"This is my small way of giving something back so that others can have the same experience during very emotional times."

Leah received one of the hospice’s charity spaces in the race, and is keen for other runners to take the remaining spots.

She said: "If there are any other keen athletes out there who want to raise funds and make a difference, why not join me?

"I’ve done it once before and I think it tops the London Marathon for atmosphere.

"The buzz is absolutely fantastic and the satisfaction and pride you get in completing it is hard to explain, but it will be doubly so this year, knowing I’m doing it for a great cause."
