Thousands of pounds were raised for a charity that supports people with learning disabilities during a golf day.

Harpenden Common Golf Club hosted the fundraiser on June 28 in aid of Harpenden Mencap.

A total of 18 teams took on the course raising £5,600 for the cause.

After the teams had finished the round they headed to the club house for an evening of entertainment including a raffle and an auction.

Anne Hignell, trustee of the charity, said: "We have worked hard to raise the profile of Harpenden Mencap as a local charity helping local people, and our annual golf day has become an important event in our fundraising programme.

"We use the golf day to raise money for our building fund which helped us achieve our ambitious plan to open 11 self contained flats in Carlton Road.

"Our golfers are very generous and have returned each year to support our cause and for this we are very grateful."

This was the third time that the golf club has hosted the fundraiser for the charity.

General manager Terry Crump: "We're very pleased that Harpenden Mencap has chosen to hold their golf day here for the last three years and we're already looking forward to welcoming their golfers back for next year's event.

"It's a brilliant way for golfers to give to a local charity which is doing great work while taking the opportunity to play our course and experience the friendly atmosphere here."

Next year’s event will take place on Friday, June 20.
