A Harpenden nursery has been named the winner of a waste collection competition after saving 1,694 used baby wipes packet from landfill.

Busy Bees Nursery, based in Rothamsted Lodge, beat 120 nurseries across the UK to win the small category of the Johnson’s Baby Wipe Out Waste Schemes collection contest to raise over £1,000 for charity in the process.

For the weight of each pack returned by Busy Bee nurseries, two pence was earned for the Busy Bees’ six regional charities of choice, including NSPCC.

The nursery has won a children’s picnic bench made from recycled baby wipes packaging material, which now sits proudly in the pre-school garden for all the children to enjoy.

Noelle Robson, assistant manager at the nursery said: "We’re really proud that with the help of staff, parents, family and friends, we saved 1,694 empty baby wipes packs from local landfill.

"All our hard work collecting and spreading the word has really paid off in terms of helping the local environment, teaching the children the importance of recycling and raising over £1,000 for the six regional Busy Bees charities including our charity the NSPCC.

"Our collections continue to grow so we encourage local people to get involved by dropping their used baby wipes packs of all brands off to the nurseries reception at Rothamsted Lodge in the Hatching Green area of Harpenden, and we will happily send them in as part of our recycling collections."

The Johnson’s Baby Wipe Out Waste Scheme is an initiative to help reduce the amount of baby wipes packaging going into landfill in the UK and Ireland with its partner recycling experts TerraCycle.
