Parents in Hertfordshire urged to apply for secondary school places in good time
Hertfordshire parents are being encouraged to look ahead and start making plans for their children’s school places next year.
The secondary transfer process, which includes applications to upper, studio schools or university technology colleges, opened yesterday (Monday).
Leaflets explaining the secondary and upper process will be distributed to families through their child’s primary or middle school at the beginning of September.
Information about the studio schools and technology colleges will be distributed directly to parents with children in Year 9 in the surrounding areas.
The closing date for applications is October 31.
The Under 11s application process - for applications to primary, junior and middle schools - opens on November 11 and the closing date is January 15.
Those with younger children will be able to apply for nursery schools and classes in mid February 2014 when nursery literature will be sent directly to parents.
Chris Hayward, cabinet member for education and skills, said: "I understand that parents and carers want their children to attend the school they most prefer.
"Hertfordshire has a good track record and last year nearly 96 per cent of children were allocated one of their four ranked secondary or upper schools and 95 per cent one of their four ranked primary, junior or middle schools.
"Hertfordshire County Council is not always able to completely satisfy parental preference, despite working very hard to achieve this. I would urge parents to carefully consider the preferences they make, to make realistic preferences and to visit local schools before applying."
