Friends of St Helen’s Church visitors, in Wheathampstead, meet BBC Antiques Roadshow expert Eric Knowles
A popular BBC Antiques Roadshow valuer took a church full of hopefuls in Wheathampstead on an entertaining romp through his life in antiques on Tuesday.
Organised for The Friends of St Helen’s Church visitors listened to a speech by Eric Knowles where he described his early life, in the shadow of Pendle Hill, Lancashire, his growing fascination with antiques and his career at Bonhams and while broadcasting.
Mr Knowles also told the stories of some noteworthy ‘finds’, like the small Rene Lalique vase sold for a completely unexpected £40,000.
The day continued with some 170 valuations given by experts in various fields and stalls and displays to raise £1,760 towards the work of The Friends in their support of St Helen’s church building.
Jane Anderson, an Independent Valuer who organised the day said: "We’ve been really happy with the day. We’ve seen some lovely things."
The Friends of St Helen’s is an independent registered charity which supports this Grade I listed building in the heart of Wheathampstead’s conservation area.
