This comes after St Albans District Council following have invested in additional resources of extra staff to speed up the processing of benefits claims and to clear the volume of work that has built up.
The delays are caused partly by the high volume of data needing to be processed following the introduction of weekly updates of claimants’ circumstances by government agencies.
At a meeting on Thursday, September 19 cabinet will hear that additional staff and the introduction of an automatic updating system have helped reduce the caseload.
It has gone down from 3,557 claims on June 16 to 2,624 on September 1.
Applicants can help process their claims quickly by taking care to provide all requested information when they submit their claim. If details are not available there will be a delay in assessing the claims until the required information is received.
Councillor Brian Ellis, portfolio holder for housing at the council, said: "By increasing the size of the benefits team and introducing an automatic system for information updates, the council has reduced the outstanding caseload.
"Benefits claimants can also help us to process claims more quickly by ensuring that they provide us with all the information required when they submit their claim."
