Missed rubbish collections in St Albans are down to staff holidays, say councillors
Staff on summer holidays during the August period is the reason for the increase in missed waste collections in St Albans, councillors say.
At a St Albans District Council meeting last night, cabinet discussed a new collection initiative which aims to "accelerate recycling beyond 60 per cent by 2015."
Green councillor Simon Grover and Liberal Democrat councillor Anthony Rowlands highlighted complaints that residents found the new recycling collection confusing and collections were being missed.
Councillor Daniel Chichester-Miles defended the new system and said due to the new recycling service both residents and crews are still adjusting to new procedures.
He explained it also caused an impact due to the contractor’s increased use of agency holiday cover who are not familiar with the procedures and a seasonal trend during August.
Councillor Chichester-Miles however reassured councillors the figures this year were much better than that of last year (0.19 percent) and contractors returned to collect all missed waste within a day of being advised of a missed collection.
