St Albans Mummers recruiting for new performers
It may only be October, and for most people Christmas is way off in the future, but St Albans Mummers are hard at work preparing for their annual Boxing Day extravaganza.
For nearly 50 years, the Mummers have taken their Time-honoured Masque of St George and the Dragon to the streets of St Albans on December 26 and this year will be no exception.
Audiences can expect the traditional mix of mayhem, miracles and monumentally bad jokes at the Town Hall, White Hart, Abbey, Fighting Cocks and Clock Tower.
The group are now asking residents, who may be interested in joining them in the future to come along to a workshop on Sunday, October 20.
One member explained: "In the past, we always had more actors available than we needed, so an individual dropping out for any reason wasn't a problem.
Now, the number of 'reserves' has dwindled, due to age, family commitments etc, so we want to open up the Mummers to new, younger performers".
"It's a chance to meet us and to see what's involved in the Mummers play. "Everyone will get a chance to take part in at least one run-through, and we hope that will be enough to convince them to join us."
The Mummers stress that they're not just recruiting for this year, but for the future.
