Liberal Democrat leader for St Albans District Council, Anthony Rowland, set to run in New York Marathon
A St Albans man will run the New York Marathon this Sunday in aid of the Samaritans.
Twelve months ago Anthony Rowland attempted to complete his second New York Marathon but was thwarted by Hurricane Sandy.
Also preventing his challenge, a 100 foot oak tree fell on the house Mr Rowlands was staying at in New Jersey with his wife, Harriet.
The 61-year-old said: "My charity place was carried over from last year.
"With 47,000 runners, it's a fantastic event to be part of even if lack of training means I will be reduced to a painful shuffle by the finish in Central Park.
"Friends and colleagues sponsored my non-participation last year to the tune of just over £4,500. I am hoping to push that up to a total of £6,000 over the two years for the Samaritans."
Mr Rowlands is the Liberal Democrat leader for St Albans District Council and is a councillor for Ashley Ward. A member of St Albans Striders for many years, he has run the London Marathon 11 times.
