Check all doors are locked and all windows, including those upstairs, are secure before you go out or go to bed
Do not leave car keys in a visible and accessible place when you go to bed
Double-lock any UPVC doors by lifting the handle and locking it to engage the security featues [if you remove the key make sure you have a fire escape plan]
Use timer switches on lamps to give an impression somebody is at home
Secure your rear garden - lock any outbuildings [sheds and garages] shut and lock gates and keep garden tools locked away
