As the colder weather descends on the county, Hertfordshire Constabulary is warning drivers not to leave vehicles unattended with the keys in the ignition, while waiting for it to defrost.
Every year vehicles are stolen when frosty conditions make lengthy defrosting necessary, as drivers leave cars unattended with the engine running on driveways or even on the street.
Inspector Paul Lawrence, of the Crime Reduction Unit, said: “At this time of year, when de-icing your windows seems to take forever, it can be tempting to leave the car running whilst you go back into your warm home. However, this can offer an ideal opportunity for a thief to jump in and be off in your vehicle in a matter of seconds.
“Many insurance companies will refuse to pay claims if vehicles are left insecure or keys are left in them, so it could end up costing you a fortune for those few extra minutes in the warm. The best advice is not to leave your car unattended with the engine running. Stay with your car at all times and be vigilant of suspicious activity.”
