St Alban's Mummers set for Boxing Day performances

St Albans & Harpenden Review: St Alban's Mummers set for Boxing Day performances St Alban's Mummers set for Boxing Day performances

One of St Albans’ longest-running Christmas customs will continue on Boxing Day, when St Alban's Mummers present their "time-honoured masque" of St George and the Dragon at some of the city’s most historic and picturesque venues.

For almost 50 years, audiences have enjoyed the mixture of daring-do, fierce battles and miracle cures, all served up with bad jokes and ham acting.

The Mummers’ play is based on a centuries-old tradition, in which groups of labourers would go around their village near Christmas, putting on simple dramas to collect some money or food to stretch their winter budget.

The Mummers will perform at the town hall at 11.30am, the White Hart Hotel at 12.15pm, the West End of St Albans Abbey at 1pm, the Fighting Cocks at 1.45pm, and at the Clock Tower at 2.30pm.
