More than hundred youngsters from City of St Albans Swimming Club (CoStA) took part in a charity swim completing over 150 miles.

On Sunday, December 15, the children from the youngest squad members aged just six up to junior squad members aged 12-years-old were each set the challenge of swimming as far as they could in one hour.

Together they raised more than £500, which will go towards supporting VICTA - a charity which helps visually impaired children get involved in sport - as well as funding new coaching initiatives to benefit junior club members.

The swimmers were treated to home-made cakes during the event, with all proceeds going to charity.

CoStA Club Chairman, Matt Jarman, said: “The club’s youngsters were really happy to support such a great cause, particularly as VICTA is committed to involving children in sport. As a club, we also want to help our younger swimmers reach their potential, and with that in mind, we’ll be using a proportion of the funds raised to improve equipment and fund additional pool time.

“The kids all put their hearts and souls into swimming as far as they could. We’d like to thank all involved, including our hardy swimmers, the parents who volunteered to count lengths, Mel Orchard for providing massages, the coaching team, and everyone who bought cakes.”

The event was championed by local physiotherapist Mel Orchard, who is a landside trainer for the club’s regular swim camps and has been involved with VICTA.

She was on hand during the charity swim to provide sports massages for all the participants, helping to boost fundraising efforts. In April next year, she plans to run the London Marathon to raise more cash for the charity.
