Much to everyone’s delight, West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust scrapped plans to charge blue badge holders to St Albans City Hospital. Campaigner Jack Easton, who collected 400 signatures against the proposals, said: “I’m very pleased. With charges coming in all over the place anything that minimises the charges for people who really need the cash has to be the right thing.”

It was great news for St Albans doctor Mary Groves, the driving force behind Grove House Hospice, after it was announced that she would be made an MBE. The 81-year-old said: “It was a total surprise and I feel very honoured. I’m quite humbled.”

Martin Brophy was also recognised on the MBE list after his work to promote and bring together lesbian and gay choirs and singers from across the world.
