The ambulance station in St Albans will be relocated following Hertfordshire County Council’s decision to dispose of the site it is located on.

The East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust confirmed today that the ambulance station just off Harpenden Road, in Bernards Heath, will close. The ambulance station is currently located in a leased building on a site owned by Hertfordshire County Council.

Since the county council announced it was disposing of the site, it made an offer to the trust to either maintain an ambulance station somewhere on the redeveloped site or to accept a relocation sum and contribution toward moving to a new site.

Due to the current station's "poor condition and it not "being fit for purpose" the trust say they have struggled to achieve full infection, prevention and control compliance.

The trust added the building was not meeting energy standards and offered poor accommodation for ambulance staff. Therefore they have now agreed to move to a new location.

Work has now begun to identify potential properties for relocation, which hopes to give the trust and staff a more suitable and modern facility to operate from.
