Chips were turned into cash when customers from a Harpenden fish and chip shop helped raise just under £2,000 for cancer charities by ordering a take away on Christmas Eve.

Godfrey’s Fish and Chip Shop, in High Street, donated 100 per cent of all of its takings on cod, haddock and chips that evening towards The Hospice of St Francis and Cancer Research UK.

Luke Godfrey, owner and manager of Godfrey’s, said: "I opened the shop just over a year ago and since day one have been touched by the amazing support of the local community. I wanted to find a way to say thank you and give something back to the community.

"Last year I lost a close friend to cancer and saw how the hospice she was in provided support and care to both her and her family at such a difficult time.

"These two charities are very close to my own heart and to the hearts of many of our customers, who gave so generously on Christmas Eve."
